A bill already passed by the Senate and set to be rubber stamped by the House would make it mandatory for all new cars in the United States to be fitted with black box data recorders from 2015 onwards.

Section 31406 of Senate Bill 1813 (known as MAP-21), calls for “Mandatory Event Data Recorders” to be installed in all new automobiles and legislates for civil penalties to be imposed against individuals for failing to do so.

“Not later than 180 days after the date of enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall revise part 563 of title 49, Code of Federal Regulations, to require, beginning with model year 2015, that new passenger motor vehicles sold in the United States be equipped with an event data recorder that meets the requirements under that part,” states the bill.

Although the text of legislation states that such data would remain the property of the owner of the vehicle, the government would have the power to access it in a number of circumstances, including by court order, if the owner consents to make it available, and pursuant to an investigation or inspection conducted by the Secretary of Transportation.

Don't want to start any "Conspiracy Theories", but isn't this the one (might be the next gen) that measures time, location, speed and signals moving violations to a main board? Read something about it, some time ago. Big Bother and Technology walking side by side.

You already have a "Black box" on board.
Federal offense to tamper with your Air Bag Restraint System.
Guess where the module that recorded your 30 seconds of data(Telemetry)is stored.
Just sayin'.

In a few years we will all have to move to New Zealand or Australia. Before you know it they will mandate sensors in beans for if you get gas they can tax you for polluting the atmosphere.
Hey Mark...got an extra room?

Its not likely that I would be buying anything new in 2015 or after but if I did I know I would find a way to disable or remove that box.
Even with the claims that access to the data will be limited you know thats not true and I am sure that insurance companies will find a way to access it so they can screw people more than they already do.

Cars with OnStar are bad enough without going to something like this. Thanksfuly OnStar is real easy to disable.

That is correct, some manufactures already have recorders on board for warranty issues that will tattle tell on you if you exceed the speed limit a lot. GM specifically has software in their new trucks that will record & imprint external software programs such as the programers a lot of you here use to add horsepower. If you have a warranty issue and they find out you have used a programmer they will most likely deny your claim.
