I'm still around..

I know I haven't posted in a long time, mundane life has been cruel to me...

I really wish there was an expert auto electrician in the club that could possibly help me with my problem that has returned with a nightmare again!!!!!!

I had posted this problem before and tried replacing the battery, starter and no luck. I did some checking online - google search about the TIPM and found a ton of nightmare stories about it. I am honestly at a total loss now as to what is causing my no start / sometimes start / sometimes have to wait 10 - 20 min and randomly try to start my truck.

I don't know if it's the TIPM, the jerks at DODGE say nothing is wrong with it, said my starter was bad so I took it back to where I had it changed a year ago and they replaced it (lifetime warranty) and it's still has the problem. I called Dodge today to see how much a replacement fuse box/TIPM would cost and because my truck "is an 05 and no one has been reporting problems with it that Dodge does not make/sell them anymore" which means they're not being made.

I am more than ready to go postal on Dodge and plan to write a nice long letter to Chrysler with plenty of profanity tomorrow about this issue.

It all started a short time AFTER they changed my drivers side air bag ( due to recall ).....................

The dealer says it's not their fault and the air bag didn't cause it, funny, never had that problem until they changed it...

Wow that does seems odd and should be unrelated but I'm still glad that I didn't do the airbag recall on my '05 and also fixed the rear-end pinion recall with a new Detroit True-Trac and Motive 4:56 gears. It is just extremely hard to have any amount of trust in the ba$+ard$...IMO

Agreed, absolutely no trust in the dealers. Tell us about your truck again and what it is doing/ not doing.. does it have skim?

Skim?

Issues with the truck - started on or about the time I had my airbag replaced... (this was back in or about August/early Sept. 2015)

Gonna be a LONG story so you better grab a couple beers or soda or what ever and kick back....

About that time I had to take my wife to Kaiser for an appointment, it was hotter than all hell and I ran the AC in the truck - I normally don't use it because it's a MAJOR gas magnet - and I parked and stayed with the truck outside with the truck off. She came out about an hour later and came over to the truck, ac was off, and I tried to start it, turn key.. CLICK.. that was it. Kept trying every few min for about 15 min and still the same thing. I thought ok, wtf, battery? Starter?

I called AAA towing to come and see if they could help and they were taking forever. I called Big Art (from HTC) and he came over with his diesel and tried to help me jump start it, we let the jumpers try to charge my battery for 20 min and still NOPE, click, no start. So we gave up on that and I decided to wait for AAA.. ALmost 2 1/2 hours later I tried again after about and it started, took her back to work and came home. Next day I went to Costco because I thought maybe the battery was bad, got a new one (I had a redtop Optima battery that was 4 or 5 yrs old) and it seemed to be ok for a couple days and then it started again. Called Dodge and they wanted 2 arms and 5 legs just to check it out (was $160 at that time) and I said the hell with that and took it to PepBoys.

They have a mandatory (at the time) $20 fee to check the alternator and starter first before they did anything else. They checked and said the starter was no good so I had them replace it (life time warranty). Truck was good for 3 days and then it started again, went back to PepBoys and they did a full electrical test and after about 2 1/2 hours said that the starter was no good and replaced it - they didn't charge me the $90 for the electrical diagnosis - and it was more or less ok. Randomly and occasionally I would still have the start problems but it would start after the first 1 to 3 or 4 tries until recently - last week - it started to do it again. I ended up on Monday of breaking down and tried to trust Dodge and took it there where they told me that my main comp required flashing or reprogramming, I let them and then they came back and said my starter was over heating because of the Pace Setter Mid Headers I have.

~~ Inserted note: I talked to Fred (from HTC) and he told me his headers are much closer to his starter than mine and it has never happened to him)
~~

I took it back to PepBoys yesterday and they replaced the starter again (under warranty) and also because they took 6 hours to get the crap done I talked them into compensating me by putting on a heat shield wrap (with metal tie straps) for free - they did. Got the truck back, turned the key and it fired right up, came home parked it, waited about 5 min and tried again and it fired right up. Later i went to the store and came out about 4 min later, got in the truck.. NO START AGAIN!

I tried off and on for maybe 5 or 10 min, no start so I called AAA to bring a flat bed to take it to my house, while I was on the phone with the lady I tried one more time and it fired right up.

FLOCK ME!

Brought it home and tried this morning, fired it up so I pulled out of the garage and backed most of the way back in and turned it off. I went to try to pull the fuse box but apparently there's more bolts than I could find holding it down because it didn't want to move - I could only see 2 on the fender and one plastic screw on the side - and YES battery was disconnected. I put it all back and then tried to start the truck to go into the garage - all this time was maybe 10 min = and no start, tried 2 more times and it started - backed in and not touched since then.

Now the fun part.............

During this past year during all of this, there was 4 random times when i tried to start it (when it wouldn't) ..

Ya know that little back rectangular box on the lower left side where your milage shows?

The word "DONE" appeared in small letters there. WITHFHIT?????????????????????????????????????????? ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ???

ALso, there's been 3 times when I was trying to start it - the box that shows what gear your in - it puts a nice little box around the letter to let you know?

ALL OF THE LETTERS HAD BOXES AROUND THEM!

During this past winter, IF I drove the truck with the heater on it would sometimes not let me start it, IF I drove with the headlights and wipers on (Calif law now - required headlights with wipers) it would not start, with those and heater sometimes not start.

I am at a total loss as to what the holy hell is going on.

There is a local guy in my area - lives same city - I had his phone number before but lost it, I got his number again today - he a specialist that goes to dealers to help them find problems in customers cars for a living - he's going to come by maybe this afternoon or tomorrow morning to my house and go over the truck with me, cost? Only $85 and I trust him, he's worked with my Nephew since the 1980's and if my nephew can trust him all this time then I will also.

Now, can someone call an ambulance for me? ALL my fingers are dead from typing so much................

Exclamation

The truck is no doubt 'possessed' by someone other than you .

Couple of things. I've never seen a hemi starter heat soaked to were it wouldn't work. It's hard to believe they keep diagnosis a bad starter when it's dirt simple to test. The only time I've seen all the shift icons on at the same time is with the transmission wiring harness unplugged. If it was me I would unplug ever plug in the system to clean, inspect and grease. First checking the trans plug for two reasons. 1st you got shift icons lit up. 2nd there is the neutral/park safety start switch also in that harness. If that wasn't making contact it would keep you from cranking. Good luck..

This sounds like something your going to have to track down. Your need to have a way to verify you have power coming out of the ignition key to the starter. You can by-pass the ignition key with a remote starter if things get real bad...

Ghost that was done back in Nov 2015 by the mechanic at PepBoys, he showed me using a remote starter with a voltage display that when he tried to start it through the fuse box it was only pushing 2 - 4 volts to the starter but when he used the connector on the outside of the fuse box it was pushing 12+ volts.

There's a black/grey connector on the left side of the fusebox (as you're facing it) that has a black and grey wire (if I remember correctly) that goes to the starter.

As I said above, I have a consultant who's coming tomorrow to do a ton of tests on the truck to see if it's the IPM or something else that's causing this. Once I find out I'll pass it along in case someone in the future has the same problem and will know what to possibly look for...
