This is your official reminder: Thursday is Valentine's Day!!
Every Valentine’s Day, men everywhere scramble to find the perfect gifts for their loved ones. And what are the two most common gifts every February 14th? Flowers and, you guessed it, Chocolates. While women purchase most of the chocolate 364 days a year (75%), the complete opposite is true on Valentines, when men account for about 75% of all chocolate sales. But why? Where did this tradition come from? Last week, we explained several of the most commonly accepted stories as to the history of Valentine’s Day. But why do we give Chocolates on Valentine’s Day?
Since it was first invented, chocolate has been considered valuable, decadent, and even divine. In fact, during the time of the Aztecs, chocolate was often referred to as “the food of the gods.” Aztec ruler Montezuma even believed chocolate to be an aphrodisiac. And when Christopher Columbus returned to Spain after discovering the Americas, he brought back gold and, of course, chocolate.
Over the years, chocolate became much more mainstream and widespread. By the mid-1800s, the Cadbury Brothers had a chocolate shop in England, selling chocolate to average citizens. Then, in 1861, Richard Cadbury created the first heart-shaped box for Valentine’s Day. A tradition was born!
