As most of you know the central part of the country has been roasting for weeks. We've been running 106, 107 and there isn't much hope for cooler temps for weeks yet. The local Fox station did a little testing today to see what the temperature of items we come in contact was with this kinds of heat...107 at test time.
Using an infrared sensor they tested several things. For instance an asphalt parking lot registered 149, a black car registered 161 while a white car was only 123. The meter was 4' from the test surface...so go figure how hot it is to the touch. That also gives you an idea of why there are so many white vehicles in the south.
Normal, Oklahoma was 112 and Oklahoma City was 111 today so it could have been worse here too. Not the 113 we had last year, but no rain since early July and that just settled the dust. Those of you getting more rain than you need could share ya know.

We've had plenty of heat here in Western Kentucky for what seems like forever. I've seen temps well over 100 degress many many times. My outdoor thermometer has been as high as 114. The drought is terrible and has hurt lots of farmers and ranchers. Fortunately we have gotten small amounts of rain enough times recently that it has helped. The temps are down some now, but the rain may be too little too late for a lot of folks.

We're in our more familiar pattern (not seen in many many years) of afternoon thundershowers and muggy! This morning @ 0730 it was 80 and heavy fog (now THAT'S humid).

We have been in the triple digits for a long time, they have declared Missouri national disaster and are doing some kind of loans for the farmers. But many people here dont care and throw out cigarette butts and it catches the fields on fire. We don't get enough rain to make a dent. Everyone needs hay and there is none around here if there is it is $80-$100 a big bale.

Last year those that could afford it had hay hauled in from the Dakotas. This year they don't have any either. Beef prices will go through the roof for several years to come.
Corn will be even harder to find before long.
