first, the aurtorities lies to pretty much everyone about everything, but it's a criminal offense to lie to them.

second, poor fuel mileage in the US, why?

Of course it had to be all about money. Moves me one step closer to start asking the feds for an itemized receipt for every nickle I "Give" them.

Government regulations and threats to the supply of oil and the decreased value of the dollar are the main reasons gas is so expensive right now. Along with some limited refining capabilities. And yes the threat of greater fuel economy on cars is going to decrease the fuel taxes paid. But if the government would just get out of the way of oil prices, quit trying to push their "Green Energy" agenda and let the Market of supply and demand determine what people drive. The rest will take care of itself. I personally don't believe the demand for a 72 mpg car is large enough to have them in the US. Besides, I believe gas is twice as much in Europe. So that might be a factor.
