Okay, everyone knows the 383 is a 6.3L, the 392 a 6.4L, and so on. But I was reading my latest Hemmings Muscle and there was a mid/late 60's chevy in it. Can't remember the exact car without looking and I am out of town or I would, but it had a 6.5L badging on the fender and motor I believe. So I was thinking it was a 396? Figured a 400 is a 6.6L if I remember right. But I got to reading the article and they kept talking about a 389ci. So I kept reading thinking they were just mentioning a 389 in the article, but that is what it had in it. So a 389 is a 6.5L? But a 392 is a 6.4L? Now I am lost. Is this one of those false advertisements like the old 5.0 where it is really a 4.9 but they wanted it to sound/look better so they rounded up or what?

Not sure but maybe that was the base eng and the 6.5 was bored or stroked using that eng as a base
Like 5.7 stroked to 6.4 or 345-392

They round it off. The only motor that I remember with 389 inches, was a 1959 to mid 60's Pontiac.

When i get home i will look and post what it is. But I knowit wasn't a stroked or bored motor. It had factory badges too. Might have been a Pontiac. I just remember it was a GM of some sort. Then maybe it will make more sense.

Well, let's see ... 61.3 cubic inches in a liter, so a 389 would have been 6.345 liters (a 6.4?).

We had four Pontiacs during the early-mid sixties - all 389s of some flavor. My Dad's '63 Bonneville had a four-barrel carb, 11.5:1 compression ratio. It regularly out-ran FHP Chevies. I remember an afternoon seeing NO speedometer needle (maybe 160 mph) - on 9.50/15 bias-ply tires and drum brakes .

As far as calculating displacement, I use 61 cubic inches per liter and that is a good estimate. The manufacturers take a lot of liberties in the displacement numbers they put on badges.
