It's actually a thunderstorm where it's too cold to rain - turns to snow - you get lightning and thunder and snow...

Snow is one thing. What I hate is the ice pellets and freezing rain. The big ice storm of '09 was rough. We had no power for two weeks! Biggest natural disaster in Kentucky history.

Damn global warming is going to freeze us all to death.
This next one may be really tough on us. Not the snow so much but the ice and wind chills. Minus 10° wind chills and highs around 20°. The weather guy just said over 80 hours of that crap for us. We're not set up for that kind of weather.

Biggest Snowstorms of All Time

I experienced thunder-snow a few times over the years. I must admit it's a bit eerie seeing lighting, hearing the thunder while all the time the snow is coming down SIDEWAYS - usually accompanied by high winds.

In Western NY, we've had severe show storms about every 11 years. As a kid I remember '55 when we would use one of mom's washtubs as a sled from the top of the road plowed snow (8' high)and slid down the creek bed. They had to cut a swath across a field with a dozer to get through to the snow and make a new road. The sides were about 8' high.

In '66-'67 we got 36" of snow in two days. My cousin's house had a drift from the roof peak all the way down to his pond - about 60' away.

'77 we got another large storm - thundersnow accompanied this storm.

Jan '89 we got hit again, and March of '92 we had the worst ice storm ever recorded in our area- 3/4" of ice coated everything. We lost power for 8 days. Trees were down all over and the power lines were strewn all over as well. I moved my truck from under the trees in our driveway to the front of the house. At daylight I saw one of the overhead power lines was sitting length-wise across my truck. It took the trees over a dozen years to recover from those terrible wounds.

So I guess we're overdue for another major storm.
