Apparently a lot of classroom doors still have to be locked from the hallway side with a key placing the teacher in harms way during a crisis. I saw this simple add on for classroom door frames that allows the door to remain locked but not latched until the rotating lever door stop is actuated. It will allow teachers to lock the classroom door quickly from the inside without having to find the key in a crisis and then go into the hall to lock the door. This looks like a cheap and effective upgrade to existing classroom doors without having to fund all new locksets. I don't know where to buy this simple little device, but there is a patent for it.

One of these, in conjunction with the proper training would be a fair deterrent, too.

Put the kids in the center of a double-ring of desks and wait for the dirt-bag to try the door.

I like the door lever because it is an inexpensive solution to the teacher having to go into the hall to lock the classroom door. Actually a simple little bar magnet will do the same thing if you put it on the steel door frame so the door won't latch with it in place. If a lockdown is ordered just remove the magnet and close the door.

The company that markets the "School Safe" device has a couple of more videos.

I agree, Utah is doing it right. More states should follow suit. Click me
