On June 28, 1968, Congress passed legislation solidifying the specified Monday where we remember those who fought and died in the wars of this nation.

While this act of Congress created the long weekend of celebration and shopping we now enjoy, the origin or the first known act of Memorial Day actually occurred long before in Charleston, SC. Freedmen or freed slaves decided to honor some 257 Union soldiers who had perished while prisoners at war on May 1, 1865. The Freedmen landscaped and beautified the burial ground, built an arch, and labeled it "Martyrs of The Race Course". Thousands witnessed this first event, spurring a tradition that rightfully lives on today.

As the American flag is raised briskly to the top of staffs across the nation on Monday and then somberly lowered to the half-staff position until noon, please take a moment of silence and contemplate those soldiers and their families who have bore the burden of seemingly infinite sacrifice. After twelve o'clock, the flag will be powerfully raised to the top again, perhaps, symbolizing the undeterred resolve of the American soldier to honor a chosen commitment and preserve the weighty legacy on his or her shoulders.

Please have a safe, fun, and reflective Memorial Day Weekend with your families.
