Remote access to Uconnect 4

Greetings All,

I hope I am posting this in the correct forum.

I was watching the news the other evening and a story was aired concerning a hacker who had gained access to a Jeep Cherokee and took control of it. I learned the issue is a security flaw in the Uconnect system, where anyone with a Sprint cell phone and laptop can hack into the Ram's system, and cause mayhem. Chrysler has a software update to mitigate the issue for our trucks, and is available for downloading, or you can take your truck to a dealer who is supposed to do it for free.

Here is the link to the Chrysler website where one can enter a VIN to see if the truck is affected: Uconnect® Software Update - Update your Uconnect® System

The site will ask for your 13 digit/character VIN. You will also need an USB flash drive of 4 gigs to install the update on. Just follow the prompts.

I performed the update on our 14 Ram and it took about 45 minutes. (I even had time to walk from the shop to the house and grab a beer and make it back before it was done!) On our truck, 11 CAN modules were updated.

The only thing you may have to reset will be the clock.

I suspect we will receive some formal notice from Ram soon, but I decided to take care of it sooner rather than later.

Take care everyone!

Unhappy

I heard the same report this morning . It affects more than just the Chrysler products / RAM according to the report I heard .

Yes it's a late 14-current software issue with all wifi chrysler products I believe. The only way for anyone to hack it they literally have to follow you closely. It's not something that can be affected as you drive by it will
Take a few mins to even gain access to the vehicle. I woudnt personally worry about it at all.

Here is the link to the article I read on this issue. It sure indicates to me that once the hackers have the IP of the Uconnect, they can access it from anywhere there is a Sprint signal. I would like a find to find a way to turn the Sprint thing off in the truck, but I have not figured it out yet.

Hello again, here is another link to another story on the Uconnect. It supports Charged392's post on it being very range limited, as Sprint remotely closed an open port in the Unconnect. I updated the software anyway, it was a painless procedure.

Fiat Chrysler will recall vehicles over hacking worries

Hopefully this issue will not re-occur.

Cheers!
