Whats wrong with my trans?

My truck is now parked at my kids school on the side of the road. Its an 04 1500 AWD Hemi

Wife called me that it was undriveable so I checked it out tonight, totally normal start up and revs perfect in Park, Reverse, and Neutral. When I select Drive, 2, or 1 it makes the most horrible grinding noise, like throwing a piece of metal into a blender, and actually rolled backwards down the slight hill it was parked on while in any forward gear.

Suggestions?

Luckily I work remote so I can skip work tomorrow to get it towed to my house.

I'm not a expert but it sounds like the ring and pinion gears in the differential are screwed.

If that seems to be the issue your lucky because its cheaper then rebuilding/replacing the transmission - I'm sure someone else will have their imput shortly.

He has a good point, maybe something broke in the transfer case since it is AWD.

Would that only engage when in forward gears? It does sounds like something is trying to engage but not quite going all the way in.

Awe come on, you mean you can't tell a random person on the internet the exact reason why their truck is broken by just reading a vague description on a forum post?

Suggestions on how to check? its sounds like a splined shaft just isnt quite engaging what its supposed to. Wondering if maybe the front drive shaft isnt quite in the diff all the way, maybe a mount is gone so it isnt at the right angle or something. Guess I'm gonna just have to get it home and crawl under it. I'll try and take some pics of anything I find and get them up.

Not this morning my crystal ball needs cleaning. Being AWD I would think the truck would still move a little with the other axle pulling if a differential was bad. Flexplate bolts sometimes break or come loose making noise, but your noise is when it goes into a forward gear. Typically the trans just doesn't work and doesn't make noise. And the transfer case is engaged all of the time, so I'd look there. But there really no telling. Let us know what you find.
Good luck...

Thanks Greg. Gonna try and take some tools over to it, maybe I can disconnect the front drive shaft on the road and limp it home.

If the transfer case is shot this would be a good time into looking to swap in a 2wd case for better fuel economy and putting a lift in it down the road.

Is your truck a RCSB? If so the AWD model is highly sought after to build performance trucks. Drop the sucker and make a go fast....

This is a 05 that I've highly admired for a long time. It is a AWD that the owner searched several states to find.
