Upgrading my 545....again

I've still been working on the weak links. As most know its the weak OD that kills them if your making some good power and tq. My improved input shafts are finally done and I just got my custom and coated OD steels that I made back. All the new parts I designed should work in theory, but how good and for how long? I still have to test the theory.

Here is the way I want to go. It is a old thread but it is still at the top of my list.

Interesting stuff going on here for sure. I will be running my 545 as long as I can I have a spare I rebuilt with added clutches just sitting. If for any reason I can get ahold of a 727 with o/d cheap I will swap it out. For now just want my heads back.

If my truck wasn't a 4x4 I would have swap it out long ago and if I do ever decide to change it out it'll be with a TH400 since I don't need the overdrive that the 4L80 has. The swap would be pretty expensive for me since I'd have to figure a way to clock the transfer case 180*, make new driveshafts, transmission and transfer case linkage, tq converter, speedo, cruise, headers, exh, etc = $$$ + fabracation time. Using a 727 could be just as expensive so in my case trying to beef up my 545 would be the cheaper option. Currently I built 3 sets of different steels to try out with an option of Borg Warner, Raybesto's and Alto clutch frictions to try. Hopefully any one of those combinations will work.

I just finished up my new and hopefully improved overdrive assembly with my one off prototype steels and clutches. I'll guaranty you these won't slip. However.....I'm now more worried about clutch chatter during engagement, broken input/output shafts and maybe a p0703 which may or may not throw the whole works into limp mode. I'll also be re using my old clutches and steels from L/R, 2c/4c, R and UD that have well over 200 passes on them since they show very little wear if any.

Looking forward to your testing Jerry. This would be a full race only clutch pack? A true stage 4/5 trans?

This little project costed me plenty of research, time and $$$ so I truly hope it works. I have 3 different styles of steels and 3 different brands of clutches to which I could make into any assorted combination and hopefully I chose the right combo on this first go round cause I'm going off my gut feeling. Besides the different clutch and steel combo's I've altered the clutch return rates in both 2c and OD so they release faster. And for what its worth it wouldn't be cost effective making them just one or two at a time so for now I'm just doing this for myself. And on a side note I can tell you I made my wife happy today cause I started clean up of all the transmission parts I had scattered throughout the house for the last couple of months and that I don't use the dishwasher for a parts cleaner anymore. lol.

This is a "Jerry got tired of building transmissions for his truck". I mostly daily drive my truck nowadays and enjoy it. The wife and I go to car shows and what not. I'll still take it to the track but that's not a huge priority anymore.
