Trans input/output sensors

Can someone explain how they work in relation to each other... noticed on scantool that under 2000 rpm they are very erratic and output is way lower... drove around all day and got back home, backed in driveway.... noticed output went to 0 rpm, but input was still at 620 rpm...could they act up, but not set a code..

I remember there is input speed which is engine rpm and output shaft speed that was a duplicate VSS sensor. Rear axle also having a VSS sensor used for anti-lok brake system. The trans VSS used to determine trans gear slippage. Along with other sensors may determine TC lockup and release.
