Torque Converter Not Unlocking

Hello everyone,

Seems I've been having transmission problems recently. About a year ago the truck started stalling when coming to a stop. Did some research and read that it could be caused by low trans fluid and the TC not unlocking. Sure enough it was about 2 quarts low, and that fixed the problem.

About two weeks ago the check engine light came on, it was a P0700. Hooked up my scanner and got a P0740 TCC out of range. The torque converter was not locking when it should. Went ahead and ordered a solenoid pack. About two days before I replaced it, it started having the symptoms of the TC not unlocking when coming to a stop again.

I replaced the solenoid pack yesterday, (both filters also) and once everything was warmed up it worked great. Now though if the truck sits for awhile it will stall out when coming to a stop. It usually goes away once everything is warmed up but sometimes it does it all the time.

I'm thinking it's probably the TC, but is there anything else that would cause the TC not to unlock when coming to a stop? There are no codes being stored in the ECM or TCM.

It's a 2005 1500 quad cab SLT 5.7L with 200,000 miles on it.

This could be the converter or a crank sensor at a certain temp usually won't set a code either.

I think your going to need to monitor this one with a scanner and as it happens see what reads wrong.

I was thinking of monitoring it with the scanner to see what it was doing.

One thing I did tonight, the truck had been sitting for a few hours. Started it, put it in reverse and it locked and unlocked, almost stalled. Same thing in drive. Shut it off and pulled the transmission relay. Started it again, put it in reverse and drive and it worked normal. Put the relay in and tried again, all good. Took it for a quick drive and everything worked fine.

Ugh, I hate intermittent problems.

For what it's worth...I never trust a relay once it starts acting funky .
