Rear end clanking

I need help. Yesterday when backing out of my driveway a loud clunk came when I turned the wheel while backing up. It's definitely coming from the rear end. It will clank and the wheels kinda skip. I took off the diff cover and everything looked ok but there was some metallic in the fluid. I got to looking at the u joint and noticed I have a severe dent in my driveshaft and it wobbles badly. The rear end was replaced in 2011. Any ideas what it could be? Thanks for any help.

Welcome to HTC.
Let the club know about your truck. Our driveline folks will need to know the year of your truck, 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive, any aftermarket parts on the driveline, etc. to be able to help you with your issue.

Welcome to the forum. First the drive shaft needs to be replaced. The metal in the lub oil I would guess is from the pinion bearings being beat by the driveshaft wobble. I would disconnect the driveshaft and with the cover off rotate the pinion to see how much movement there is. The metal flakes are coming from somewhere....

To HTC!

Did you happen to take a look at your pinion nut while under there? Its a sensitive spot for me, and for these trucks. Also, does it only make the noise while backing up? How bout when turning going forward? Also, does it make the noise every time, or intermittent?

It makes it in both directions, but mostly reverse. And it shakes a lot when going faster. I have it jacked up with the rear wheels off. Took off driveshaft. Bent pretty good. Having hard time finding a replacement.

How did the shaft get that way? Mine got bent when my pinion nut came loose and the shaft hit the road. Did you hit a rock or stump someplace?
