pinion bearing

i think the pinion bearing in my 06 1500 is going out. it has a humming noise that i thought was the tires but the dealership said its from the rearend. what is the normal cost in having the bearings replaced? thanks

ahh not good. its like 5hrs labor I believe to rebuild diff which is basically a bearing change out. if you go that far if you ever planned gears that's the time to do it.

I would check to see if the truck is included in the pinion nut recall. Diff. pinion nut backs off causing catastrophic damage. If it is, it should be repaired on Chryslers dime.

It is a new one, so someone on here should have the details.

Pretty straight forward job since the ring & pinion are being reused in the original housing. The original shims setup will be reused with the new bearings. Tools can be bought relatively cheap off of eBay.

well i had the pinion bearing replaced last week and the noise hasnt changed. the owner of the shop ( a friend of mine) drove it after it was done and he said it sounds more like the tires. i was thinking the same thing when the dealer said it was the pinion bearing.

when they took the diff cover off it only had about 1 quart of oil in the rear end which should have had almost 3. im wondering now if maybe the axle bearings are what are making the noise since they werent getting lubed.

this morning when i backed it up (rearend cold), it had a chatter feeling for a few feet. im not sure what could be causing that problem.
