New '14 2500 has diff howl
Hello fellas, new guy here! Few weeks ago got a 2500 with a 5.7, 4x4 tradesman crew cab short bed. 3.73 gears, manual transfer case, just a base truck with the chrome package.
Well now that I've racked up about 1400 miles on this rig, I believe I've got a case of diff whine. 53 to 67, equal to about 12 on the xm... Let off gas it quiets some, but coast and it just changes pitch.
What's y'all's thoughts on this? Will this affect the longevity of the axle?

That low of miles it shouldn't be out of spec. I would take it to the dealer you purchased it from, or a near by dealer and have it inspected. It's under warranty, so make them fix it.

That sounds like a pinion bearing. You can read up on it in the service manual. Being a new truck I'd get to the dealer ASAP.

Man sure was hoping for smooth sailing with this truck ... But I've had issues with them all... Toyota, Chevy, ford & nissan....
Just don't make them like they used to! Other than the whine I love the truck.

This is from the manual.
BEARING NOISE
The axle shaft, differential and pinion bearings can
all produce noise when worn or damaged. Bearing
noise can be either a whining, or a growling sound.
Pinion bearings have a constant-pitch noise. This
noise changes only with vehicle speed. Pinion bearing
noise will be higher pitched because it rotates at a
faster rate. Drive the vehicle and load the differential.
If bearing noise occurs, the rear pinion bearing
is the source of the noise. If the bearing noise is
heard during a coast, the front pinion bearing is the
source.
Worn or damaged differential bearings usually produce
a low pitch noise. Differential bearing noise is
similar to pinion bearing noise. The pitch of differential
bearing noise is also constant and varies only
with vehicle speed.
Axle shaft bearings produce noise and vibration
when worn or damaged. The noise generally changes
when the bearings are loaded. Road test the vehicle.
Turn the vehicle sharply to the left and to the right.
This will load the bearings and change the noise
level. Where axle bearing damage is slight, the noise
is usually not noticeable at speeds above 30 mph.

Thanks ! Hate joining a forum with an issue though. Driven a bunch of Hemi powered 2500s for work they all been solid. Anyone know what could have caused the pinion bearings to be worn or out of spec this new?

Faulty parts, it happens. I've gotten new parts in for stuff that was bad, doesn't matter what flavor of machine. In fact just yesterday I took a brand new pull switch out of the box and went to screw the knob off and the shaft just turned freely, pulled on it and the whole shaft came clear out My dad and uncle's truck had the flywheel come apart with only 1100 miles on it. They figured it was cracked from the factory. That's what warranties are for I guess lol
