Need help for a friend

A buddy of mine recently bought an 04 Ram 4.7L (not a hemi I know) and he's having an issue that I don't know how to diagnose. He said sometimes when going to leave from a stop it will rev up but not move, like its in neutral or park, but if he lets off the gas and then back on it will jerk alittle and then go. Its only done it a couple times since he bought it but that was only a week ago. Any ideas?

forgot to mention its the 545 trans. and its got 140k miles

first I would check the fluid level. if it's full then I would take it back if he got it from a dealer.
I have read someplace that if you use an after market filter it can fall down in the pan and makes it starve for fluid just an idea??

Yes check fluid first. If ok ask if its only when first started after sitting for awhile. Is so there is likely I fluid drain back issue or filter problem in pan area.

Keith, I went ahead and checked his fluid for him after he told me what it was doing. It was at the correct level and was a reddish brown color. (he doesn't know the first thing about cars and he's color blind) I crawled under the truck and didn't see any loose plugs or fluid leaking. Everything was up to temp when it happened and in the week he's had it, it hasn't sit for more than half a day.

I thought that too, not sure how to check that though. He never touched the shifter though, just let off the gas and then back on it.

theres a tsb out for delayed engagement after stting for a little while. the filters need to be inspected in the pan to rule them out. but if you go that far in might as well change them out to new OE ones don't trust the parts store ones.

Hi Ramsey,

Like Charged 392 said, +1 on the filter change. Had a 71 Sport Fury Gran Coupe that would go about 2 miles then act like the tranny was dead. Limped it home changed the fluid an filter and no more tranny issues.

"a reddish brown color" tells you right off the bat that the tranny fluid is most probably fried and needs a desperate change along with the filter.
