benefits to aftermarket differential cover? & What's a cross pin?

I'm swapping in some 4.56's this weekend. I was looking at different parts and saw all kinds of different covers. While I doubt I need one, just curious who and what they cater to... does the stock unit become weak under hard launches?

Also, the installer said something about a cross pin. What's that and will they have to change it?

Covers help to strengthen the diff housing since they are a lot thicker than the crap stamped steel one factory. That being said I have not broken my diff at all with the factory cover. I would not trust a factory center chunk with a ton of power get a good locker like the Detroit true Trac or another unit. Also if you flip the axle (lower truck) weld the factory spring perches completly or they will tear off and ruin something.

Your perches all welded Nathan you had your tear off already. The covers that hold the fluid in are 1/2" thick or more in most parts in turn strengthening the entire assembly.

Also, the cast aluminum covers typically have ridges on them. This helps to dissipate the heat from the fluid, and ultimately keep it running cooler.

Don't a lot of the after market covers have things like a magnet to collect any metal shavings, a easy drain and fill plug, and some I have seen have a dip stick to check level.

You can get a magnetic plug to fit any diff cover, usually aftermarket come with a magnetic plug

There's a magnetic in the stock housing stuck in a little recess on the bottom of the housing. I welded a drain plug on my stock cover to make it easier to drain. The stock cover uses a rubber fill plug.

My PML cover has the drain plug and magnet. I need to do a fluid service on mine, but as long as we're touching 100 degrees, it'll wait.
