Axle rebuild

Redtruck kicked my butt today. Tore the axle apart and found the front pinion bearing had a single roller chewed up. Of course it contaminated the oil and showed burnishing on the other bearings. Started putting it back together and for the life of me I can't get the crush sleeve to collapse. Maybe tomorrow.

I used my gun to load it last time, this time it's fighting me. I would pull it back out and crush it in a vice if I didn't already have the seal installed. I'll probably have to make a stronger lock bar.

Yep, that's what I did. Now have home made side adjuster tool. Just have to remove a little bit of the shim from pinion now. While I'm at it. Going to replace all bearings and reset up the gears. Again.......

Made the tool and still couldn't crush the sleeve. I know I had that sucker in the 250+ range. Played hell trying to get the nut loose. After I pulled it apart I put the crush collar in my bench vice and cranked down on it with an extension and all I managed to do was bend the handle. That's the first time I've bent the handle in 25 years of use. I took the old sleeve and slid it onto a steel bar and banged on it with a hammer to stretch it back out a little and installed it. Still need to put the tires back on but fired it up and it's quiet and smooth. I'll finish tomorrow.

I set the backlash at .006. I took it for a 10 mile test run yesterday and was a little brutal with it, when I got back it was too hot for me to hold my hand on it for more than a few seconds. I can't find my temp gage... This morning I went out again and ran at normal speed on back roads for about 15 miles. Got back and had no problem holding my hand on the cover. Couple more runs and I think she will be fine. Reusing the Ring&Pinion I didn't really think it would need to be broken in again and was a little surprise at the heat.

350 plus to crush the sleeve.

You need some more muscle on it

I Deff agree with 350 I almost snapped my breaker doing mine!

I set mine to .005 since I go to track a lot the natural tendency when you accel they try as push apart anyway is why I went tight. Haven't had any issue since my gears are also a use set I tire the teeth off my 4:56 set hehehe
