It reads the wheel speed for the abs brake system against what the other wheels are doing and vehicle speed.
If you're doing say 60 mph and jump on the brakes, in the rain or snow it's more easily noticed, and say the rear wheels are gonna slow more than the front, it relives pressure to those calipers so they don't lock, and you remain able to steer around whatever you may need to...... BUT!!! people don't drive so it's kinda a wasted effort on the manufacture to put it into the vehicle anyway.
