Dash Cam

I did a search and either my Search-Fu is weak or there isn't anything here about them.

Looking at the rise in ignorant drivers with wingmen for witnesses, I've decided its time to add a dash cam with front and rear coverage to the truck. You cannot argue with video.

I've been looking at the Thinkware cameras, but everything I've read about them says they don't do well when it gets hot outside. In a black truck in the midwest, its gonna get hot.

So... speak up and preach it. Who's got one, what do you have, how do you like it, and what would you do different?

thanks

Dave

lol.

what I'm looking at is when two assholes tag team a newer / nicer vehicle to create an accident.

It goes like this...

Jackass one pulls up on the drivers side, passes and then starts to change lanes into your lane before they have actually passed you. You hit the horn and the brakes, they jerk back into their lane and slow down along side you while their passenger starts yelling and screaming at you...then when you're fully engaged with the passenger- the jackass driver taps his horn or flashes his lights and their buddy who is in front of you driving a junkyard reject spikes the brakes and you rear end him because you're distracted by the passenger seat jerk. Then they stick around to tell the responding officer that you were driving like an idiot, swerving, playing on your phone etc... and, because they claim not to know each other, the officer writes you the ticket...

It hasn't happened to me, however, It has happened to two different co-workers AND one of my neighbors.

THIS is what is driving me to a dash cam. It may not provide full absolution, however it will poke big holes in the tag teams story.

Thumbs up

Will the style that mounts up high above the mirror work for you? It still gets hot there but you can heavily tint the upper portion of the windshield to help a little...Oh and make certain you have cc...that helps too...if needed .

The spot I was looking at was high up and to the passenger side of center of the rear view mirror for the front cam and high up and to the passenger side of the sliding rear window for the rear cam.

The various reviews I have read between Amazon and BlackBoxMyCar have said that about 130 degrees, the cam appears to be working, but the video captured is un-usable.
The units don't seem to capture usable video until they are back below 100-105 degrees F.
It doesn't take a very hot day in a black truck to hit 130F+ at the headliner. Even going down the road with the AC putting frost on your toes.

I like the thinkware units because of the easy integration of a second cam in one recorder, and the fact that there is NOT an on unit screen so you cannot be tempted to look at the video when you should be looking out the winshield.

I've also been looking at units by PapaGo and Rexing. Garmin offers some as well, but I really don't want a screen hanging by the mirror.

If I would have bought a different model than the Sport, I would have already bought a RoadArmor bumper for it.

The deal that we got on the Sport was good enough I pretty much got tunnel vision and didn't think through things completely.

I have been looking for a Bull Bar, but everyone I find you have to cut the splash shield on the Sport to install it. I do know that a Bull Bar pales in comparison to a true- monster class bumper, but its better than a naked plastic wrapped bumper.

I am open to suggestions.

I won't be doing any planned heavy off-roading with it and I won't be bracket racing with it, so, other than the limitations of the Sport model, I'm pretty flexible at this point.
