I will say this one more time and I will not harp on this matter again! Follow your manufactures recommendation on Oil for your motor.
This is the Intranet: Don't do it just because I said it works awesome for me!
Just keep on top of your Oil maintenance and Keep cool Kleen Air coming in and drive with common sense and your motor will outlast the body and interior.
You're dead right that these lower viscosity recommendations are mainly due to the CAFE.
I performed oil analysis on my 03'. The first oil change was to AMSOIL's 0w-30 and I added the by-pass kit at the same time. I went 3 years and 35,000 miles without an oil change. I changed the filters when I was supposed to and topped off the oil, that was all. I only had to change it at 35K miles (on the oil, 38K on the vehicle) because the viscosity was closer to a 40 vs. a 30. As you probably already know the PAO base oil that AMSOIL uses doesn't break down and will get a little thicker over time. You might also know that AMSOIL buys the PAO from Mobil. Just sucks that Mobil doesn't use it themselves that much anymore ever since Exxon bought them.
Keep up the good work SyN and keep us updated on the UOA!
I run Mobile 1Vtwin synthetic in my 2008 Harley. Checked the cam shoes and the primary chain shoes after 36k, no wear at all, looked brand new. These new Harleys are notorious for producing heat, another reason I run synthetic. Synthetic handles the heat much better and has a higher shear point. IMO, much better than dino oil.
As for my truck, I'm on my second oil change done by the dealer (free?@?). Once I start changing it myself, I'll run synthetic and get it analyzed to determine the appropriate change interval.
I use to be a Quaker State man for may years, until in the late 70's I pulled down my Dodge 318 that had 63K miles on it, due to cam lifters gone bad. I found sludge build up in many places, even though I changed oil & filter every 3K miles. I discovered others were also having this problem. I ran Valvoline 50 in my older 76' Harley, but have always used synthetic oil in my newer Harleys.
Maybe Quaker State has better performance out of their synthetic. I just know they lost me as a customer back then, and I will never go back.
I agree with you on the old stuff. I started using the new Quaker state synthetic in the Chrysler 300 I had, advance auto had one of those oil/filter specials( I frequent bob is the oil guy site and saw some good reviews so I tried it.) I sent a sample in to be analyzed (I will see if I can find the paperwork) and I got back a report with a lot of info I did not understand called them and they said the lab results were great. So I kept using it. I used to use amsoil in my HD but I was a qt low and did not have an extra bottle was scared to mix oils but no one had any local so I added a qt of what was on the shelf I had only gone about 1K on the amsoil but being scared of mixing I ended up changing it. Valvoline 50wt synthetic is everywhere and now I keep a extra qt in my saddlebag!
That is the only problem with AMSOIL, you can't find it on anyones shelves. I fix that by ordering oil for my Harley and Truck by the case. I get 4 oil changes on my Harley per case. The truck I get one oil change plus 5 extra quarts for the next one. I just order another case for the truck each time I change oil. I carry a quart in my tool box on the truck. Harley never uses enough to worry about since I change oil on it every 3K miles.
Thanks for the link! I was just checking brands and looked at wal marts syn tech, amazing that it seems just as good as a lot of well known name brand stuff.
The manual for the 2014 6.4 Hemi specifies the Pennzoil 0-40 oil that's made from natural gas. From my experience, on engines we've torn down that used Pennzoil, had lots of sludge buildups. If I could find another oil that meets the Chrysler spec, I'd use it. I'm not a Pennzoil fan.
Hemidriver: Years Ago Shell Totally Revamped the Pennzoil Line!!! Today!-->Pennzoil has some of the best off the shelf oils!! Thousands of UOA have proven this!! If U can't find Pennzoil 0W-40 Locally?-->M1 0W-40 is one of M1 most Robust True Synthetic Motor Oils. U can use it with full confidence! I believe Castrol Edge has a 0W-40!
Pennzoil Conventional -->aka {PYB} is very close to a so called synthetic oil! Many owners have taken this oil to 5K-7K mile OCI with excellent UOA results.
I am a M1 User and have been for over 30yrs!! But! I have done the research and witnessed hundreds of UOA & VOA of Pennzoil oils and all are Top Notch! Don't Fall for all the False Witness!
The Key is adjusting your OCI to your driving habits and design of motor! Our Hemi's are very easy on oil->Hence 10K mile OCI are very easy to achieve! Especially if most of the miles are Highway or Interstate and very little city driving... Over extending your OCI and depleting the oils additive package is what forms all the containments within the engine! Oil Shearing due to engine design also is a major factor!
Here is page 759 from my owner's manual that advises me to use only motor oil that
meets the Chrysler MS-12663 spec, which only Pennzoil Ultra Platinum seems to do.
I don't want to cause any warranty issues by using an oil that does not meet that spec.
Take care everyone,
HemiDriver
Component Fluid, Lubricant, or Genuine Part
Engine Oil – 6.4L For best performance and maximum protection under all types of operating
conditions, the manufacturer only recommends full synthetic engine oils
that meet the American Petroleum Institute (API) categories of SN. The
manufacturer recommends the use of Pennzoil Ultra™ 0W-40 or equivalent
MOPAR® engine oil meeting the requirements of Chrysler Material Standard
MS-12633 for use in all operating temperatures.
Is your truck a 2500? I just used AMSOIL's lookup to see what they recommend. The 6.4L isn't listed for the 1500.
For the 2500 they recommend EFMQT which is a 5W40. If that doesn't meet your spec than AMSOIL wouldn't recommend it. As long as you follow AMSOIL's recommendations you're backed with their warranty and also your manufacturers warranty.
It's another option over Penzoil.
This is a common issue with new vehicles. Sometimes it takes up to a year or more for offerings to come from other companies.
I was going to comment but you beat me to it! If you live in a large city-->You might not have a hard time finding this spec oil... If you live in a small town or rural area you will find it almost impossible to find except for online!
Local WM is the cheapest place to buy the 5QT jugs of Pennzoil Ultra here but it is never on the shelf-->Only Platinum is stocked-->Which is still an outstanding oil... But 0W-40 is like finding Bigfoot!!! Only 2 0W-40 my local WM stocks is M1 & Castrol Edge! Oreillys and Autzone and Napa stock 0W-40 if ya want to pay almost $40 for a 5Qt jug!
It is kind of odd, I mean online I only found info about using 5w20 or 5w30 and people going crazy about using thicker oil saying it will blow up , get clogged and you know the mopar gods will punish you if you do so,and then I see this sticker on the hood of my truck by daimler chrysler of mexico and well they do build the engines over here.
Any idea why the factory recommends the other ones ?
